JW Marriott Marquis Dubai named official host of the 2013 Matchplay Championship final

As golf enthusiasts put away their clubs following the successful conclusion of last week’s 2012 Matchplay Championship, the soon-to-open 1608-room JW Marriott Marquis Dubai has been named the official hotel partner for next year’s Grand Final. The announcement follows the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) and Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to advance sports tourism in the emirate. In addition to establishing Dubai on the global conference market landscape, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai has pledged to support DTCM in positioning the emirate as a global sporting hub by championing and playing host to international sporting events.

As part of its role as official host of the 2013 Matchplay Championship Grand Final in Dubai, the JW Marriott Marquis will take care of the players throughout their stay. With a choice of 10 restaurants, 4 lounges and entertainment venues, and a world class spa and health club, guests will enjoy the sheer luxury, scale and grandeur of the world’s tallest hotel just months after its official phase one opening in Q4 2012.

Commenting on the partnership, Rupprecht Queitsch, General Manager of the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai said: “Sport is an integral part of tourism and holds huge growth potential for the promotion of Dubai as a year-round business and leisure destination. We are therefore proud to become a partner of this internationally-recognised tournament that has become a highlight on the European amateur golfing calendar.”

With thousands of players competing from all over the UK every year, the Matchplay Championship is one of Europe’s largest amateur golf tournaments. Players compete in Men’s singles, Men’s Pairs and Mixed Pairs, where knockout stages are followed by regional finals played in better ball stableford format. 40 lucky golfers then go through to compete in the Grand Final – to be held at The Els Club, Dubai in May 2013 – enjoying seven night’s accommodation at the luxurious JW Marriott Marquis Dubai.

“Under the guidance of the DTMC and DSC, we are confident that Dubai will gain further recognition as a global player and established host and organiser of international sporting events with its superior venues and excellent organisation. We look forward to ensuring that the 2013 Matchplay Championship is another feather in Dubai’s cap as a leading host of high-profile sports events and cannot wait for the players to experience everything that our iconic hotel has to offer.”

The Matchplay Championship provides an opportunity for amateur golfers to experience a world-class venue and positions Dubai as the ultimate place to relax for golfing fanatics. The MOU between the DSC and DTCM is set to encourage further sports tourism in the Emirate that already boasts a number of globally renowned events, including the World Golf Championship, World Cup Racing and the Duty Free Tennis Championships.
