Yazdi wins Sharjah Golf and Shooting Order of Merit
Hassan Yazdi pulled off a virtuoso performance in the final round of the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs, Malaysia Truly Asia Order of Merit.
Yazdi went into the final round in 3rd spot on 103.5 points, 10.5 points behind Order of Merit leader and defending champion George Lui (114), but also only 11.2 points ahead of 4th placed Vinod Arya (92.3). With the leading 3 qualifying to represent SGSC in the World Golf Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur in September all eyes were on Lui and Roy Holmes (3rd – 111 points) in second to battle it out for the title and Yazdi and Arya expected to lock horns for the all important 3rd spot. With the quartet drawn together for the final round an exciting afternoon was assured.
To most people’s surprise Yazdi produced one of the performances of the season to win the Medal (and final qualifying round) outright by virtue of a net 73. This outstanding score considering the pressure earned him 26 points to catapult him to top spot (129.5) as 7th round leader Lui finished in a tie for 10th (earning him 10.5 points) and second spot (124.5 points).
Arya finished a creditable 8th taking 12.5 points, which would have been enough has Hassan not finished inside the top 20. Roy Holmes had his worst round of the season finishing in a 4 way tie for 17th gaining just 2.5 points with only his early season form giving him a sufficient enough cushion to survive Arya’s late charge.
