Tiger Woods made a winning start to his campaign in Dubai when arguably the greatest golfer of all time, pairing with Mark O'Meara, won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic Challenge Match at the Emirates Golf Club on Tuesday evening.

The pair birdied the last hole to post a sizzling four-under-par 23 to take the honours, two shots ahead of the pairing of Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez. The team of golf in DUBAi ambassadors – Jeev Milkha Singh and Seung Yul Noh — finished third a further shot back.

The Challenge Match, one of the highlights of the tournament week, was followed an official dinner reception which golf in DUBAi — the promoters and organizers of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic — hosted for players featuring the field. The prizes were presented by Mohammed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi.

The six marquee players were split into three teams, each comprising two stars and played the nine-holes in the greensomes format in which both players hit their tee shots and then select the best-positioned ball. Thereafter, they hit alternate shots with the same ball until the hole is completed.

The par-27 course, measuring 1,239 yards from blue tees, has been designed such a way that it tests the skills of all. The longest hole on the course is the 194-yard third hole while the shortest hole (the fourth) measures 96 yards.

"The players for the challenge match were selected on the basis of their rankings and, of course, for their star value on the tour," said Buamaim. The intention behind organizing this match is to provide an opportunity to fans to watch the top stars up close and personal.
