When the GOLF BUG descends and you decide it’s time to get back into Golf

Steven Morgan gives his thoughts on such a common Golfer issue

So here’s how it goes – you have been watching the professionals shoot in the mid 60’s week in week out on television, you are feeling the cooler UAE winter weather set in and suddenly the GOLF BUG descends and you decide it’s time to get back into your golf.  You set out with all the best intentions, you commit to practicing at least twice a week, you sign up for the member’s competitions at the weekends but then after a few weeks, you realize it’s not going the way you would like it to.  That dreaded fade you had previously is turning more into a slice, the standard 2 putts are becoming a shaky 3 putt and the score has gone from a comfortable 80 to an embarrassing mid 90’s.  You think it’s because you are not practicing enough to make the extra effort to hit more balls.  Your friends and playing partners are filling your head with useless swing thoughts they think will help (albeit with the best intentions).  You start reading all the tuition articles in all the golf magazines but not one tip seems to work and after struggling for a number of weeks now, you completely lose the desire to play and practice!  Sounds familiar?  I thought so ……

Here in the UAE we are spoilt for choice with regards to game improvement options.  Floodlit practice areas and par 3 courses, accompanied by a number of very good coaches in the region are all here to help you improve your game.  I know what you are about to say – if I go and have a lesson the professional will ‘change’ and ‘fix’ everything that comes naturally to me.  This is not always true, good coaches have the ability to work with what you already have and to build on your swing from there rather than break everything down and start again.  The single best piece of advice I can give you is to have a lesson and gain knowledge of your swing.  I guarantee you this will help!  If nothing else, it will give you some focus when you’re out on the range rather than aimlessly beating balls with no goal.  A good coach also has a number of ways to install confidence in your game, one of the most important aspects in the game of golf. A good lesson will help you regain that Golf Bug!

Best Wishes
