Waine Smashes Jebel Ali Golf Resort Course Record in UAE PGA Event

What can only be described as one of the best performances ever in a UAEPGA event, Abu Dhabi Golf Club professional Phil Waine romped to victory in the Jebel Ali PGA Medal on Tuesday by smashing the course record the Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa was a flawless round of 7 under par 65 to claim a six shot victory over Ryan Smith and Martyn Hamer.

In a round which included birdies and holes 1,2,4,6,7,14&18, Waine was never in any real trouble and as a result never scored worse than par on any hole.

A delighted Waine said ‘It’s never easy winning an event on the UAE PGA these days, especially when you look at the standard playing in each event. So to win by six shots when competing against players like Callum Nicoll, Martyn Haymer, Anthony Buchanan and Steven Munro was a big surprise.

I didn’t hit the ball well during the warm-up but I got off to a fast start and just felt comfortable throughout the round and kept giving myself birdie opportunities. On the two occasions when I was out of position I managed to get up and down quite comfortably. I never thought about my overall score or course records during the round, I just stayed aggressive and tried to birdie each hole.

To hold the course a record at the unique Jebel Ali Golf Resort and one of my favourite courses in the region is a big honour and hopefully it stands for a long time to come. I’d like to mention both Martin Steel of Abu Dhabi Golf Club who has helped me a lot this year with my game and also to Stuart Taylor who helped me with my putting and equipment fittings’.

On a day that was all about Phil’s performance, which moved him up to third place in the Order of Merit, Alan Johnson and Mark Ruddy rounded out the prizewinners with level par rounds of 72.

The next event takes place on Tuesday 16th December at the Montgomerie.  Entries are now being accepted online for this event.
