Volunteers required for the forthcoming DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

With just over three months to go, an army of experienced marshals and officials is beginning to take shape ahead of the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, the thrilling conclusion to the 2013 Race to Dubai.

Under the watchful eye of Chief Marshal Jenni Hoskins – in charge of all marshals and volunteers working at the US$8 million tournament – around 300 recruits will be charged with helping ensure the smooth operation of the DP World Tour Championship, which will feature the top 60 players on The European Tour.

“Invites have gone out to previous years’ volunteers and their reaction has been very enthusiastic and encouraging,” said Hoskins, who will manage the operation from her home in England before heading to Dubai for a hands-on role in the build-up to the event, which will feature the top 60 players on The European Tour.

To be played on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 14-17 November, the DP World Tour Championship is one of the biggest sporting events in world golf and is just as popular with the marshals as it is with the players and spectators.

“The volunteers love this tournament and are always very eager to be part of the team again,” added Hoskins, who is now in her third year in the role at the Earth course. “However, there are always those who can not make the commitment due to a number of reasons, which is why we are always grateful to hear from first-time or returning volunteers.”

Although the event allows volunteers to play their part in assisting a huge flow of spectators – last year saw 58,000 golf fans descend on Jumeirah Golf Estates – the job entails long, but ultimately rewarding hours working alongside many of the world’s biggest names, including the likes of US Open Champion Justin Rose, former US Open Champion Graeme McDowell, 2009 DP World Tour Championship winner Lee Westwood and Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter.

“Days start before the first ball is struck and often do not finish until the last schedule for the next day has been posted but every day is an exciting and fulfilling challenge,” added Hoskins.

“We work in a close, almost family-like environment and most of the team express how delighted they are to play their own part in the success of the event. It’s a unique opportunity to be part of one of golf’s biggest events of the year and see some of the finest players in the world up close and personal.”

While many of the volunteer marshals will have previous experience, Hoskins is always happy to hear from enthusiastic golf lovers who would also like to get involved with the team and play their part in the DP World Tour Championship either as marshals charged with crowd management and player movement or assisting with TV scoring support.
