Troon Golf Abu Dhabi launches internship programme with UK’s Myerscough College

Abu Dhabi Golf Club has launched a competitive internship programme in partnership with Myerscough College in the UK. The programme invites up to three students to spend a term working at the golf club across a range of roles including events, retail and operations to help further students’ career prospects in the industry’s ultra-competitive jobs market.

Spearheaded by Phil Waine, a former Myerscough student himself, the programme offers talented students the opportunity to gain real, hands-on experience whilst adding the prestige of the Troon Golf brand to their CVs.  In conjunction with Troon Golf, internationally recognised as the world’s leading golf course management company, Abu Dhabi Golf Club is providing the students with accommodation, catered meals and an allowance for the duration of their internship.

“The industry is becoming more and more competitive, and it is challenging to get that first job without vital experience on your CV,” says Phil Waine, Golf Operations Manager at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

“We are committed to growing talent, not just at a regional level, but internationally too.  The initiative aims to give talented youngsters the chance to learn about working in a golf club from the inside out, experiencing roles in retail, operations and events.”

The first cohort began in January when the golf world’s eyes were cast onto The National course to watch some of the best players in the world compete in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

“The Championship was an incredible opportunity for them.  The prestige of the Desert Swing championships, and the calibre of players who play in them, has really helped to attract international talent to come and work in the industry in the Middle East. We are finding increasing demand for jobs in this region.”

Phil studied Golf and Leisure Management at Myerscough, graduating in 2006.

The 27 year-old from Liverpool said: “I know from my own experience when I graduated how competitive the golf industry can be – that’s why I’m leading this programme.  At the moment the programme is run with one college, but we are in talks with other universities.  The interns know that the programme is a chance for them to impress as well, and we do bear in mind any potential job openings or positions at the end of their time with us.  We will also share their details with the other Troon Golf properties if we think someone is suited to a role with them.”

Currently interning are Simon Borley, Steven Hewitt and Scott Wood, who will finish in May to return to their studies in the UK.

Steven Hewitt, 23, graduated from Myerscough College with a BA(Hons) degree in Golf Management:  “The move to the Middle East could not have come at a better time for me and I can honestly say it’s the place to be! Life out here is great and there are so many great opportunities to be had.  I am enjoying all the aspects of organising events at the golf club.”
