Su wins Inaugural PowerPlay Championship at Al Badia Golf Club

The first ever PowerPlay Championship at Al Badia Golf Club got underway on Friday where a strong field of 43 players took to the course.

In PowerPlay Golf, players can choose to play to the easier red flag or the more difficult black flag. If they score a net birdie or better to the black flag, they earn double Stableford Points. Each competitor was compelled to take exactly three ‘PowerPlays’ in the first eight holes and then another three between holes 10 and 17. They then had the option of a fourth ‘PowerPlay’ on the ninth and 18th for a final bonus, but knowing a net bogey or worse would result in three penalty points.

Anthony Su scored an incredible 48 points to take home the winner’s medal, using his ‘PowerPlays’ almost to perfection.  Anthony doubled his points on four holes where he scored net birdie, followed by receiving a penalty of minus 3 points on the 18th.  Anthony’s hard work on the previous 17 holes was still enough to hold off the challenge of Joe Rasmi and Khalid Samawi, who both scored a solid 47 points, with Rasmi coming second after the count back.

In the on-course events Richard King came agonizingly close to getting a hole-in-one on hole three with his ball landing only three feet from the pin.  Needless to say it was enough to win the nearest to the pin competition.  The long drive competition was won by Sylvan Denis, who ripped a 299 yard drive straight down the fairway on the 13th hole.
