Steve and Fred’s Summer Scramble Success at Al Hamra Golf Club

Steve Rayment and Fred Watts gelled beautifully together to win the Summer Scramble event with a one shot winning margin.

This was the first summer scramble type event that Al Hamra has held and it was obviously a very attractive format as 22 pairs turned up Friday morning looking for glory. With a minimum of only 6 drives needing to count per player the scoring was surely going to be low, with competitors able to play in a much more aggressive manner.

Champions Steve and Fred got off to a slightly rocky start dropping a shot on the second but they quickly recovered with a birdie on the next, followed up by two more on holes five and seven. This saw the pair head out with a two under gross score of 34 and some positive momentum.

Unfortunately they couldn’t quite match their back nine to the front as they picked up two birdies and two bogies for a level back nine of 36 and a round total of 70. With a team handicap of 4.6 the duo finished with a worthy winning score of 65.4. Closely behind in second was the mother and son team of Xi Hau Su and Xiao Xia Su who also had solid nines of 36 and 35 for a one under gross score of 71.

With a team handicap of 4.6 this would leave the pair on 66.4 and a comfortable claim of the second podium spot. Finishing in third place and picking up the last available team prize was the pair of Ruo Gu Su and Shui Hua Li who also had an identical round gross score of 71, after nines of 35 and 36. With the pair only receiving a team handicap of 3.8 this would result in a net score of 67.2 and the resulting third prize. Ruo also picked up a special event on the day for his nearest the pin effort on hole four whilst Steve had the closest shot into hole fifteen.
