Rayment and Rita Crowned 2012 Club Champions at Al Hamra Club

The 2012 Al Hamra Club Championship took centre stage on the 23rd and 24th March over the Championship course, which had been specially set-up and was in immaculate condition all in preparation for the  flagship event of the year.

The format as always for this event is a 36 Hole individual strokeplay split over two consecutive days and although there were many net prizes on offer the main prize on all competitors wish list was the overall best 36 hole Gross score and honor of being crowned either the Mens or Ladies Club Champion 2012.

Play got underway on day one from 12pm under perfect golfing conditions with all competitors keen to get of to a flying start and post a good enough score to be able to put themselves in contention come the final day. With all scores in and counted it turned out to be only 3 shots separating the top 6 players with Johan Thorell and Byron Kraemer having the best scores on the day with rounds of 80 each. Rita Engelbrecht had the best ladies score of 87 which saw her take a comfortable 8 shot lead into day two.

Day two saw play get underway from 8am with the leading trio of Steve Rayment, Byron Kraemer and Johan Thorell teeing of last.  This was going to turn out to be a real tussle for the championship with anyone of a possible nine players having a real chance of being crowned champion. As play came down to the final group down the final hole it had appeared that Byron and Johan had slipped back in the field to leave Steve Rayment with the only real chance of picking up the title. With Paul Tipping the current clubhouse leader on 163 it turned out that Steve just had to finish with a double bogey or better if he was going to win. Steve held his nerve and sunk his last short put to finish with a double bogey 7 after unfortunately hitting his third in the water,  all of which didn’t matter though as he still picked up the main prize, one that he had been after the winning the last few years, after always being in contention. The Ladies Club Champion with a total of 173, after rounds of 87 and 86, was Rita Engelbrecht who became the clear winner in the ladies division and resulted in back to back Club Championship trophies.

The two top Net prizes for the Championship went to Eric Engelbrecht in the Men’s division who posted scores of 72 and 74 giving a total of 146 beating runner-up Angelo Kondes by one and Ma Li Min in the Ladies division who finished with a total of 141 after scores of 74 and 67.
