Qatar’s leading Golf lights looking to shine
Saleh Al Kaabi and Jaham Al Kuwari will rub shoulders with the elite of the European Tour when the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters
Two of Qatar’s most promising players – Saleh Al Kaabi and Jaham Al Kuwari – will rub shoulders with the elite of the European Tour when the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters gets underway on Thursday at Doha Golf Club.
The progress and quality of golf in Qatar continues to go from strength to strength with the support of the Qatar Golf Association’s Junior Programme sponsored by Qatar Gas.
A steady flow of low-handicap youngsters has come up through the ranks from the grass roots and last year the Qatar National Golf Teams emphasised their progress by enjoying their most successful season so far.
Both Ali Al Shahrani and Saleh Al Kaabi secured medals in the men’s division of last year’s GCC Golf Championship in Oman, with Saleh Al Kaabi winning the gold and Ali Al Shahrani the bronze.
The National Team finished third overall in the Men’s Championship to take the bronze medal while the Junior Team took the gold with individual prizes going to Arnav Jain (silver) and Fahad Rizwan Mir (bronze). In the Women’s Championship Nada Rizwan Mir finished in second place individually to earn the silver medal.
Additionally last year, the National Team took the silver medal at the 38th staging of the Arab Golf Championships at Gammarth Golf Club in Tunisia, with Saleh Al Kaabi taking the bronze medal individually.
At the Arab Junior Golf Championships in Morocco the Qatar boys 18-and-under team secured their first ever medal in the event – silver – an unprecedented achievement. Secretary General of Qatar Golf Association Fahad Nasser Al Naimi said: “This event is considered one of the strongest championships at youth level because of the participation of strong Arab countries in this game, and our youth team succeeded to secure the silver medal for the first time in the history of the tournament.”
Stars of the European Tour will be arriving in Doha today as they prepare to compete in the 22nd staging of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, with the famous Mother of Pearl Trophy up for grabs on Sunday.
The first round is set for Thursday and entrance to all four days of competition at Doha Golf Club is free of charge for spectators.
