Professionals Retain Dubai Trophy by Narrowest of Margins

The professional team captained by Luke Cantelo retained the prestigious Dubai Golf Trophy by one solitary point from John Mills’ brave amateur side.

The professionals started strongly in the singles matches taking six of the opening eight fixtures to give them a tally of 15 and a half points. With the final pairing already declared a tie between two injured players the professionals had posted 16 points to retain the title. However the result of the 11th fixture in the tournaments history came down to the last match on the penultimate hole after a superb comeback from the amateurs.

The score stood at 16:15 to the Professionals with the final match between Richard Sheridan and Pontus Fredriksson all square on the 16th tee. A confident Fredriksson had the honor having just won the 14th and 15th holes; but unfortunately was too aggressive with his par putt to win the hole and took two more to gift Sheridan the lead. The par 3 seventeenth saw Sheridan find the right hand bunker and Pontus hit a superb long iron to within 15 feet of the hole. Sheridan splashed out to within 2 feet forcing Pontus to hole out. Pontus missed the putt and the professionals had secured the half point needed to win the match out right.

The amateur side won the singles 9:7 with the match result 16.5 to 15.5 to the professionals
