Minimum of 10 players from the amateur ranks qualify for Mena Golf Tour final round

Organisers of the MENA Golf Tour have announced a major step to ensure a minimum of 10 players from the amateur ranks qualify for the final round of play.

Hitherto, only those amateurs featuring among the top 50 in the overall standings of a tournament qualified to play in the final round. The new rule, which is already in operation, sees the top 40 professionals plus ties and top 10 amateurs plus ties from their respective divisions proceed to the final round.

“Ours is a unique tour in the sense that it allows amateurs to compete and benefit from the experience of playing with professionals,” said Mohamed Juma Buamaim, chairman of the MENA Golf Tour.

“This new rule will provide the amateurs with more playing opportunities and help intensify competition in their division,” he added. “Previously, there were instances when only five or six amateurs made the cut and that necessitated a review of the cut rule.

Morocco’s Mustapha El Maouas is currently leading the Order of Merit standings in the amateur division with 139 points, followed by fellow countryman Ahmed Marjan (119) and England’s Jean-Michel Hall (106)

A superb initiative by the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation, the MENA Golf Tour is supported by Omega and Mercedes-Benz. It is affiliated to the Arab Golf Federation and the R&A – golf’s governing body — and boasts a combined prize fund of $US 525,000, including $US 75,000 for the Tour Championship.
