Massin Victorious in the Saif Zone Golf Society League

The anticipation grew throughout the afternoon during the action filled final of the SAIF Zone Golf Society League! MASSIN held their own when it looked like Dubai ExPutts 1 might take the trophy.

Greg Donaghy and Marc Edwards of Dubai ExPutts won their match 4&3 against Sidik Jamal and Ahmad Feisal of MASSIN. The second match also looked to be going Phil Sharpe and Mark Cunningham of Dubai ExPutt’s way, until Syed Redzal and Mohd Firdaus of MASSIN won the matches 18th hole to finish 1up, resulting in a play off for the overall title.

On the first playoff hole the respective captains selected Syed Redzal and Mohammed Firdus (MASSIN) and Mark Cunningham and Marc Edwards (Dubai Exputs) to represent their society in the play off.  No shots were received by any player on the stroke index 13, 375 yard par 4, 1st hole meaning a shot for shot contest was ensured.  The only player to find the green in regulation on the opening playoff hole was Mohammed Firdus.  His solid 2 putt par meant Mark Cunningham had to hole a 6 foot par putt after chipping from the back of the green to prolong the play off.  Cunningham’s valiant effort caught the right lip of the cup but failed to drop.  The crowd erupted into applause as MASSIN Team Captain Ramli Sulaiman ran to embrace his victorious team.

The 3rd and 4th place play offs between Dubai Divots and KEGS 2 resulted in yet another play off. The first match was won by Nick Fraser and James Maher of Divots but the second match didn’t go their way, with Dave Minchin and Guy Watson of KEGS 2 winning with a record beating 9&8 finish. The play off proved to be another record breaker, only finally being decided after the 21st hole with KEGS emerging as eventual winners to take 3rd slot…

Running alongside side the SAIF Zone Golf Society League fixture was a Captains’ and Sponsors’ Stableford which was won by Mukti Rai (Nepali Golf Society) with 37 points. He beat off close competition from Philip Corcos (Dubai Men’s College) with 36 points and Chito Albay (FIGME) with 35 points.

Claire Badger, Golf Business Development and Sales Manager commented “It was great to invite back the Captains from all of the societies and the Sponsors for a complimentary season ending golf day. This whole tournament would not have been possible without the support of the Captains and of course our Sponsors, SAIF Zone, BMW and World Wide Golf, so it is nice to be able to show our appreciation. It’s sad to have reached the end of the tournament but judging by the positive feedback we have received from participating societies this year, they’ll all be back to battle it out again next season!”.  The 3rd edition of the SAIF Zone Golf Society League will start from October 2011
