Bijan Majidi and Helmut Franek captured the Pearl Trophy with a 1 up victory at the Royal Golf Club. The matchplay tournament, which saw over 20 pairs enter at the start of the event in April came down to the final hole of the final game contested between Bijan Majidi and Helmut Franek against husband and wife pairing Ed and Louise Daly.
In a match that was fiercely contested over 18 holes with both pairings holing lengthy putts, Majidi and Franek came out on top despite Ed Daly chipping in on the 16th hole. Majidi and Franek took a one shot lead into the final hole where a half was unfortunately not enough for team Daly.
“We are delighted to win,” commented Majidi at the prize giving. “We should have won it on the 15th when we were 3 up but Ed and Louise made us work for it all the way round and we were fortunate enough to win it on the last.”
“That was a fantastic final match,” said John Wilson, the Royal Golf Club’s Golf Events Key Accounts Manager. “Ed & Louise were up, then it was back to all square, then Bijan and Helmut were up. It really was a great game of golf. After the 8th hole the combined total for all four players was 7 under par so it was a great standard of competition. At one stage I thought we would have to go to a 19th hole. Congratulations to Bijan and Helmut on winning the Pearl Trophy 2010.”
