Lynn books his place in the Dubai World Championship
David Lynn’s second place finish to Simon Dyson at the KLM Open saw the Englishman secure his place in the top 60 in The Race to Dubai, guaranteeing him an appearance in the season-ending Dubai World Championship presented by DP World.
While Dyson’s €300,000 winner’s cheque saw him smash the €1million barrier for season’s earnings and move up one place to ninth position, Lynn’s €200,000 cheque meant a hugely significant leap forward – from 67th to 38th for the Englishman.
Lynn was in 74th place in The Race to Dubai a fortnight ago, but a sixth place finish in the Omega European Masters and then last week’s rousing performance in Holland mean he has jumped 36 places in the space of two weeks.
Lynn will now contest the $7.5 million Dubai World Championship presented by DP World over the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates from December 8-11, after considering taking an early end of season break before his excellent run of results changed his outlook.
“The Dubai World Championship was something I had not even thought about until right now to be honest with you,” admitted Lynn at the KLM Open on Sunday.
“I was actually going to hang the spikes up in another four or five tournaments, so with any luck, I will be playing for longer than I thought at the end of the year.
“The Dubai World Championship is a huge tournament and the one we all want to be playing in at the end of the season. The prize fund is massive and then there is also the $7.5 million Bonus Pool – it is a very big event.”
While Lynn was the biggest Race to Dubai mover of the week, there were also significant manoeuvres at the business end of proceedings as Lee Westwood edged past Martin Kaymer to move into fourth position after Kaymer’s missed cut in The Netherlands stalled his progress.
US Open Champion Rory McIlroy’s third place finish at Hilversumsche Golf Club cemented his place ahead of Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel in second place with €2,151,474, but Luke Donald remains the runaway leader at the head of the field with his already formidable total of €3,778,199.
With several big money prize funds still to be contested before the season climaxes in Dubai, Donald can still be caught but it will take a superb run of form from one of his nearest challengers to pass him in the closing stretch.
