Lisgo and Campbell win Yas Links International Pairs UAE qualifier

So from Abu Dhabi’s friendliest club, it was off to the capital’s most stunning golfing venue on Saturday as Yas Links made it’s 2012-13 entry. On an unseasonably warm morning, there were several pre-tournament favourites and while Bill Lisgo and Elizabeth Campbell were amongst those, it was not a foregone conclusion. Even when they posted a superb early score of 43 points, there were several pairings behind them who were capable of passing them. Not least of all, 2011-12 world finalists Walter Hall and his son Ronan were determined to defend their title albeit with different partners. With several ladies in the field and with this strong course often favouring the fairer sex, much was predicted of the mixed teams.

Ultimately however, Lisgo and Campbell’s score held off all challengers and they claimed victory by a comfortable two-stroke margin. Elizabeth prepared for the tournament by running in the Abu Dhabi Striders Half Marathon the previous day and this proved to be ideal as she produced the ‘best round of her life’! Three net eagles from the 13-handicapper were ably assisted by five net birdies between the pair and with home course advantage they will enter the National Final amongst the favourites,!

Second place was Brian McClure and Steve Paul Burnell who looked set to cause a late leaderboard change until they both double-bogeyed the par-3 17th where their challenge ended. Third place went to Elwood Hyden and Alex Iapichino who scored a respectable 39 points despite a lacklustre opening few holes. Hyden also claimed the nearest-the-pin prize on the 13th hole while Roman Hawczak was closest on the picturesque 8th.

The Yas Links lucky draw saw Neil Heywood win a stay at the luxury Yas Viceroy resort!
