Lexi Thompson and Hee Kyung Seo win the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Challenge Match

Lexi Thompson of the US and South Korea’s Hee Kyung Seo combined effectively to win the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Challenge Match at the flood-lit par-3 course of the Emirates Golf Club on Monday night. The duo carded two-under 25 to win by one shot. The pairing of Cindy Lacrosse (US) and Dubai-based Kavita Sehmi finished second beating the team of Laura Davies (England) and Shanshan Feng (China) on a countback.

Thompson believes her early success in the fun-filled event will hold her in good stead when she launches her bid to defend her Omega Dubai Ladies Masters title on Wednesday. “Last year I had won this (Challenge) match in the company of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson, and managed to keep the momentum rolling all the way through.

“I am not sure how the event will unfold this time around, but I will try to give my best shot and see what happens come Saturday. I will try and focus on one shot a time and not get ahead of myself,” said Thompson, who carded an impressive under-15 total of 273 last year to win the title by a good four shots ahead of South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace.

Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi, and Malik Bey, regional sales manager of Omega, presented the prizes at a gala dinner where the players competing in the season-ending Ladies European Tour were presented with Abayas. A best-dressed competition further added to the fun.

The players, representatives of the sponsors and invited guests also made bids for exclusive sports memorabilia during a live auction to benefit Breast Cancer Arabia.

Promoted and organised by ‘golf in DUBAi,’ the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters will see 108 players compete over four rounds from Wednesday for a purse of €500,000, with €75,000 for the winner. The year-ending tournament is being played at Emirates Golf Club for the seventh consecutive year.
