Lee leads pack in second Saif Zone Sharjah Cup

Seung In Lee produced an emphatic display in the 2nd SAIF Zone Sharjah Cup
to take the title by an unprecedented 16 points.

Lee, a member of the host
venue Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs first round 41 point total gave him a
slender 1 point lead over UAE National Abdulwahed Al Qasem (EGF).
Professional Trevor Marshal (SGSC) sat in third place on 38 points while 3
players, Westley Burke (SGSC), P. J. Marriott (EGF) and Robert Gayle (EGF)
sat within striking distance on 37 points.

Meanwhile at the other end of the scoreboard the first round cut fell at 23
points with Simon McDonald (ARGC) coming in the 52nd and final qualifying
place by virtue of a scorecard playoff.  12 players missed the cut from a 64
strong field.

Day 2 proved much tougher playing conditions as strong winds and a shamal
made the 7,000 yard layout play at its most testing. The only player in the
top 10 who was able to better their score was leader S. I. Lee who, off a 20
handicap index produces a flawless 43 points and an emphatic victory.

Robert Gayle managed 31 points to take second and Trevor Marshal returned 28
points to sneak into 3rd spot (66 points) with 3 players sat on 64 and an
incredible total of 16 players finishing between 60 – 64 points.

Martin Duff, Director of Golf at SGSC commented “What a fantastically
exciting weekend it proved to be. The cut stimulates interest at both ends
of the scoreboard day 1.  On day 2 the live leader boards and having the
leaders paired together and teeing off last made for a real tournament
atmosphere few higher handicap golfers get to experience.  If Mr Lee hadn’t
been in such imperious form it would have been quite a battle for the title.
His 43 point days 2, considering the conditions, was phenomenal.  Our
congratulations to him on a fine victory and of course our thanks to the 60+
players who spend their weekend with us and of course loyal event sponsors
SAIF Zone”.
