Laura Davies has plently left in the tank

Laura Davies has flashed an ominous warning to her rivals, saying she has plenty left in the tank. “I love playing golf and travelling around the world. So, I really don’t want to stop playing any time soon,” said Britain’s all-time great ahead of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, starting at the Emirates Golf Club from (December 8).

“If I am competitive, then I don’t really want to do anything else. Tom Watson nearly won the (British) Open last year at 59. I am 45, and maybe have another 14 years, who knows.

“I'm not comparing myself to Tom Watson, but if he can still be playing that well against the class of players he was playing against last year, you never know,” said Davies will be targeting her 80th victory on the Majlis Course where she has finished equal second, third and tied for fourth in her three appearances in Dubai.

“I love this tournament – it’s one of my favourites,” said Davies who has been appointed as a golf in DUBAi ambassador. “It’s an icing on the cake to an absolutely brilliant year. It’s really nice and an honour to be part of the tournament on a slightly bigger level,” said Davies.

Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi – the promoters and organizers of the season-ending Ladies European Tour event – was equally delighted with the four-year partnership with Davies.

“The job of a golf in DUBAi ambassador is quite simple: just wear the logo, go around to different parts of the world and, hopefully, make the name DUBAI visible. I am sure Laura will do a good job. I welcome Laura to our family and wish her luck with this tournament.”

The winner of 79 career titles in 21 different countries, Davies herself is looking forward to the euro 500,000 tournament.

“Obviously, it’s been a cracking year: five wins, a couple of near misses as well. Not so good in America but on the European front, it’s been a fantastic year: probably my most successful,” said Davies, the seven-time European No.1 who first topped the Order of Merit 25 years ago in 1985.

“There are so many good young players now and at the age of 47 it would just be nice to think that I can still mix it up, not just on the odd week, but for a whole season and I think I’ve played eight tournaments less than Lee-Anne which would make it even more special for the fact that I’ve played in a lot less events than her and still come out on top.”
