Laura Davies confident of ending season with a win in Dubai

The English veteran, who has won at least one tournament in every year bar 2005 since turning professional in 1985, is yet to win a stroke-play event this season, even though she led the European team to victory in the Solheim Cup in September.

The only player to compete in all Solheim Cup events since 1990, Davies celebrated her longevity in the game in style when she, pairing with Melissa Reid, defeated Brittany Lang and Michelle Wie 4 and 3 in a fourball match to surpass Annika Sorenstam as the leading scorer in the history of the biennial tournament with a tally of 24.5 points at Killeen Castle.

Spurred on by the success, the ‘golf in DUBAi’ ambassador sounded confident of finding the putting groove in the remaining two events on the Ladies European Tour where she finds herself among the favourites.

“Results wise, I’ve not played that well but playing-wise, I’m hitting it really well. It’s just my putting that’s let me down. Hopefully, I will be able to find the winning form and end the season on a high note,” said Davies, who also headlines a strong field at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, starting on December 9.

“I love Dubai. I love the tournament. The (Majlis) course is one of my favourites, so playing there is really special for me,” said Davies, who finished runner up to Annika Sorenstam in 2007.

“It’s a great honour to be part of the ‘golf in DUBAi’ team that has done a tremendous job in raising the golfing profile of this brilliant city. They’re lovely people and look after us so well. It really is a compliment to be put as one of their ambassadors,” said Davies, who boasts 79 career titles, just four shy of Tiger Woods.

Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of ‘golf in DUBAi,’ commented: “Laura Davies is a legend and a true icon of the sport. We feel privileged and honoured to have her on board as one of global ambassadors.

“She will be making her fifth appearance in Dubai and that is a big boost for the tournament and will ensure large attendance figures across the tournament. I wish her the very best.”
