Kaymer retains Abu Dhabi with impressive display

Martin Kaymer took the prize again in Abu Dhabi dominating the field

Martin Kaymer took the prize again in Abu Dhabi dominating the field with 4 solid rounds moving him into 2nd place in the world rankings. It’s the first time that 2 Europeans have been one and two since July 1993. The potential world No 1 spot must be firmly in his sights this season with Westwood and the others in no doubt that the German means business, even at this early stage in the season after stamping his authority in the UAE opener.

It was Kaymer’s 9th European Tour International schedule victory in his 100th European Tour event and he has won this event on 3 occasions out of the 5 times it has been held (which included finishing second in 2009). Martin Kaymer also now joins Ernie Els as the only other player to win the same Middle East event 3 times (Els Desert Classic 94, 02, 05).

With faultless rounds of 67, 65, 66, 66, Kaymer was in full control of this event brushing aside a quality field that included the four major holders. Challenges from other top players and past winners failed to materialize. Mcilroy, Goosen and Mcdowell had a good try with Rory coming closest, but the German failed to crack and pushed on with a superb display. Of course it’s the start of the season and the first event for many of the field, but it was still a commanding 4 days for the German.

The event itself was slightly spoiled by the weather which was unusually poor for most of the week, but some quality golf was played that included 3 hole in ones on 3 consecutive days, which does not happen in many tournaments.

Ryder Cup announcement

It was also memorable event for the unveiling of the new Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal which was one of the worst kept secrets in golf. There does not seem to be a bad word to say about the spaniard and he looks a superb choice to hopefully lead Europe to another victory.
All the players that were asked to speak of Jose, were singing his praises, I just hope that does not add extra pressure when the heat is on. Sometimes in battle, when promoted to boss, tough words have to be said to trusted friends and colleagues who respect you putting a strain on many a relationship.

The swing is now well under way in the region and the tour rolls on to Bahrain for the inaugural Volvo Champions event at the Royal Golf Club. Firstly good luck to them from us and do not forget that updates from that event will be posted on the UAE Golf Online website.

Personally, I am really looking forward to the Dubai Desert Classic, part 2 of the UAE Golf calendar as this as just gave the appetite for more, see you next year Abu Dhabi.
