Ian Botham to appear in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic’s Celebrity Challenge Match

Celebrated cricketer Ian Botham will spice up the Omega Dubai Desert Classic’s Celebrity Challenge Match when he joins some of the leading golfers in the ‘made-for-fans’ event at the par-3 course of the Emirates Golf Club on February 7.

Sir Ian, whose exploits on the field, especially his 1981 Ashes heroics, have become part of folklore in international cricket, has always been a keen golfing enthusiast, having featured in charity and pro am events even in his pomp.

“I can remember running around at the age of three, wanting to play golf, cricket and football. I was always active, one way or another, driving my parents mad,” as he famously said.

“I look forward to coming Dubai where I have played a number of friendly rounds. It will be a good opportunity to meet up friends. I would like to thank golf in DUBAi for their invitation,” said Sir Ian, who also endorses PowerPlay Golf, a new nine-old format described as ‘Twenty20 cricket for golf’.

In a glittering Test career spanning 15 years from 1977, he played in 102 matches, scoring 5,200 runs at 33.54; taking 383 wickets at an average of 28.40; and holding 120 catches. A good limited over’s player as well, Sir Ian was a selected Wisden cricketer of the year in 1978.

The Challenge Match this year will see six marquee players, including Lee Westwood and Fred Couples, team up with celebrities from different field, promising a swinging time for fans.
