Haywood wins inaugural GOLF CITIZEN UAE Series Qualifier at Yas Links Golf Club

Ian Haywood put local knowledge to good use as he secured victory in the GOLF CITIZEN UAE Series Qualifier played at Yas Links on Saturday.

While one of the most picturesque courses in the UAE is also considered one of the toughest, conditions were even more challenging thanks to soaring temperatures and strong winds.

With six players qualifying for the 2013 Series Grand Final and the chance to win a coveted spot on the 2013 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Pro-am, there was plenty to play for.

Ian led the way with a superb 35 stableford points in the ¾ handicap format. His round, which was highlighted by net eagles on the 2nd and 10th holes, didn’t get off to a flying start, but once he found his rhythm, he proved impossible to beat.

A countback was required to determine 2nd place as Ornella Parigi and Paul Barbone finished on the same score. Ornella’s back-9 proved superior by a solitary point as she edged the bragging rights. Ornella’s steady style might prove decisive in the Grand Final while Paul will be hoping for a more consistent performance in December.

Completing the list of qualifiers was Brian McClure, 14-year-old Darren Hall and Thomas Kunt. This trio of single figure handicappers will fancy their chances when they compete over the testing Faldo Course at Emirates Golf Club in December!
