Golden Kim of Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club prevailed over a 95 strong field in Friday’s Summer Open Golf Championship supported by Worldwide Limited.

The Korean, who has been in fine form of late, returned respective 9’s of 20 and 22 points from his 21 course handicap.  Kim played in the 8am shotgun and picked up points on every hole of his round including 5 net birdies and 2 net eagles en route to collecting the winner’s trophy and a 42” plazma TV.

The field was split into 5 additional divisions with male 0 – 14 handicappers forming Division A, male 15 – 28 handicappers forming Division B.  There was also Men’s and Ladies Gross categories and a ladies net division.

M. S. Jhang (12) of Al Badia Golf Club won Division A, falling 1 short of Kim’s total with regular SGSC visitor Nick Hymas (EGF – 12) coming second on 39 points.

Division B was an extremely tight contest with a 3 way tie on 40 points for 1st place.  Peter Gutteridge (SGSC – 15) unfortunately lost out to Dave Lamb (EGF – 21) and Gan Baisong (SGSC – 20) who both had electric back 9’s of 21 points only to be separated by a last 6, last 3 then 18th hole count back with Lamb’s par, bet eagle on the 419 yard par 4 18th hole making the difference.

George Lui (SGSC – 2) made the most of home advantage to steer off pre gross tournament favourites Miki Mirza and Paul King (both DCGYC) as he returned 34 scratch Stableford points.  School Teacher Ian Plant (SGSC – 4), making a rare appearance in tournament golf, also bettered the Creek pairing as his gross round of 31 points, including 5 gross birdies secured second spot, again on a count back (from Mirza).

From the ladies division the talented Georgina Lui (35), daughter of gross champion George, carded 41 Stableford points in her first ever 18 hoe tournament.  13 year old Georgina’s round was particularly impressive as she displayed stout concentration recording a minimum of 1 point on every hole and a fields best of 8 net birdies or better on route to her victorious 41 point total.  Sandra Grenet (EGF – 10) won the ladies gross division as anticipated with 20 points.
