Daniel Hendry breaks course record to win Emirates Golf Federation Shaikh Rashid Trophy at Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa

Daniel Hendry produced the best round of his career, matching the course record, to win the Shaikh Rashid Trophy, organized by the Emirates Golf Federation, at Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa on Saturday.

The young prodigy from the Emirates Golf Club fired a bogey-free 69 to go three under 213 for the 54-hole strokeplay event, beating his nearest challenger and defending champion Michael Harradine by a good four shots to record the biggest win of his short golfing career.

Hendry’s playing partner Craig Marchbank, also of Scotland, finished third on a gross 220 after signing off with a disappointing 77 while Emirates Golf Federation’s Order of Merit winner Miki Mirza settled for fourth on 223, just one shot ahead of his fellow Dubai Creek member Dino Varkey.
It was 17-year-old Hendry who dominated the proceedings with a flawless performance, his 69 equalling the course record set by Bahrain’s Nasser Yacoob during the 1999 GCC championship at the Peter Harradine-designed course.

“I am really delighted with my overall performance during the tournament. This is the first time I have shot a bogey-free round and that’s kind of icing on the cake,” said Hendry after receiving the winner’s trophy from Shaikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation. David Thompson, regional general manager of Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa and Zeyad Al Baker of Dutco were also present at the presentation ceremony.
“I thoroughly enjoyed playing on this course which was in great condition. I was pretty nervous at the start, but a steady par calmed my nerves and thereafter things fell in places. I made some solid pars besides those three birdies,” said Hendry, who plays off a plus two handicap.
“At the moment I have no intention of turning pro. I may think about it once I finish by graduation course which will take at least four years,” said Hendry, who plans to travel to the United States for higher studies.
Much was expected of Marchbank, but the young Scottish boy faltered on the back nine, dropping five shots in four holes, starting from the 11th. The similar was the story with Harradine who bogeyed the 15th, 17th and 18th to lose the way.

“I needed a strong finish to have any chance of catching up with Daniel. I did try my best but my aggressive approach didn’t work in the end. Anyway, I have no regrets. Daniel played really well and deserved to win,” said Harradine.

Among the UAE nationals in the field, Faris Al Mazroui made it to the podium, finishing runner-up to James Sayer of Arabian Ranches in Net Division (0-10 handicap).
Saeed Albudoor, general manager of Emirates Golf Club, thanked the players, the sponsors and the management of three courses where the tournament was played for their great support. The tournament, sponsored by Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa, was well supported by Gulf News and Ernst and Young.
