Corfield joins Dodd at the top of the leaderboard at Mena Golf Tour Qatar Classic

England’s Lee Corfield carded a three-under par 69 to join Welsh ace Stephen Dodd at the top of the leaderboard on a five-under 139 after the second penultimate round of the MENA Golf Tour’s Qatar Classic at Doha Golf Club on Tuesday.

One shot off the pace overnight, Corfield reeled off four birdies and a bogey in a round he described as “solid” to seize joint control of the $50,000 tournament along with experienced Dodd, who fired a tidy 68, blazing with five birdies and a bogey.

England’s Zane Scotland, a four-time winner on the tour this season, matched Dodd’s effort to occupy solo third a shot further back on a four-under 140, one ahead of England’s Daniel Owen, who followed his first round 70 with a 71.

Scotland’s Fraser McKenna produced the best round of the day, a 66, studded with six birdies on the back nine to move into a tie for the fifth on a two-under 142 along with overnight leader Tyler Hogarty of South Africa who settled for a second round 73.

With just four strokes separating the top nine, the final day’s proceedings promise to unfold an exciting finish to the eighth event on the MENA Golf Tour this season.

England’s Corfield sounded quite pleased with his day’s efforts. “I played just solid golf. I hit a lot of fairways which kind of made the job of executing approach shots a lot easier,” said the Englishman, who will be celebrating his 31st birthday on Wednesday.

“It’s a nice position to be in, going into the final round. Both Stephen (Dodd) and Zane (Scotland) have won quite a few times on the tour and obviously they are playing really well. It will be great if I can win tomorrow,” said Corfield, a member of the Jamega Pro Golf Tour.

Dodd, winner of the last week’s Abu Dhabi GOLF CITIZEN Open, said he played nicely. “Overall, it was a pretty good round. See what tomorrow brings,” said the Welshman, a three-time winner on the European Tour.

Slovakia’s Jakub Harinda reached two-over 146 after a playing level par in second round to share the lead with England’s James Allan in the amateur division, one shot ahead of Morocco’s Karim El Hali.

Elsewhere, Morocco’s Faycal Serghini made a good recovery adding a 71 to his opening 77 while Asian Tour veteran Yasin Ali made a second 74 to move to tied 15th on two-over 146.

The cut was made at seven-over par 151 with 49 professionals and 10 amateurs making to it to the final round.
