Consistent Noh targets Omega Dubai Desert Classic

One of golf’s most compelling young talents, Noh Seung-yul will be hoping to build on an extremely consistent rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2012 when he returns to compete in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club from January 31 to February 3. Widely tipped to follow in the footsteps of celebrated Korean star KJ Choi, the 22-year-old ‘golf in DUBAi’ ambassador produced three top-10s, highlighted by his best tied fourth the AT&T National where he broke par in the first three rounds to enter the final round one stroke off the pace.

The South Korean prodigy, who missed just four cuts in 24 starts to finish 37th in the FedExCup, believes the experience of playing on the PGA Tour will hold him in good stead when he lines up for honours with the likes of former world number one Lee Westwood and defending champion Rafael Cabrera-Bello at the longest-running European Tour event in the region.

“It has always been my dream to play on the PGA Tour since I was a kid. Obviously, I am delighted to be able to live the dream. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed it and hopefully there’ll be some more good times to come,” said Noh whose stock has risen hugely since bursting onto the Asian Tour as a 16-year-old in 2008.

Noh turned professional in 2007 and successfully negotiated qualifying school for the 2008 Asian Tour. He won the Midea China Classic that season, and was named Asian Tour rookie of the year. In 2010, he won the Maybank Malaysian Open to become the second youngest winner (18 years, 282 days) ever on the European Tour after Danny Lee (18 years, 213 days).

“I’ve got the ability and it’s just up to me to play well, take my chances and make sure you keep going. One good week can change your fortunes completely.

“Being a golf in DUBAi, a win will be great, but for that to happen I need to produce something special since the field comprises many big names,” said the South Korean who has joined golfing greats Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia and Michelle Wie as a brand ambassador for Omega, one of the world’s leading watchmakers.

“I am really looking forward to my trip to Dubai. I can’t wait to get started,” said Noh whose aim is to win Major championships and eventually become better than his idol Choi.

“Noh is one of the most exciting young talents in golf, who has already achieved an extraordinary level of success during his short career,” said Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi – the promoters and organizers of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters events.

“His two victories on the European Tour and a very consistent first season the PGA Tour amply show he has a great demeanour for golf.  This is just the beginning, and I am sure we will see more of him in time to come. I wish him the very best.”
