Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club News

Club Championship 2012 results Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club

Dubai Creek’s most prestigious member’s event was played over the weekend with over 80 gents, ladies and juniors battling it out in their respective categories over 36 holes.

The winner of each category would receive the recognition from most people as the club’s best player.  Once again the event was sponsored by leading golf apparel brands J Lindeberg and Chervo.

After two superb days of golf on the stunning Dubai Creek course, Bayhaan was crowned champion for the first time after two consecutive scores of 76 gave him a total of 152 which was a very solid effort in the testing conditions.  Beaten into second place by just one stroke were defending champion Miki Mirza and the overnight leader and Tejan Fadlu-Dean.

It was a tense affair between the three players at the top who played together in the final round.  They arrived on the 16th tee with Lakdawala on +7, Mirza on +8, and Fadlu-Dean on +9.  All three managed to find the green on the difficult par 3 but it was only Lakdawala who managed to get down in two putts from long range to save par and so he extended his lead by two strokes over Mirza and three over Fadlu-Dean.  On the par 4, 17th hole once again all three players found the green with their approach shots but this time it was only Fadlu-Dean who managed two putts on the lightening fast creek-side green meaning that Lakdawala had a two shot lead over both his playing partners with only the 36th and final hole to play.

Surprisingly all three players found water off the tee so were playing their third shots to the green.  Mirza played a superb fairway wood from over 200 yards over water to within just five feet of the flag.  Fadlu-Dean then almost matched Mirza’s superb strike with his own fairway wood shot but unfortunately it came up just short of the green.  Then with an iron from the left rough Lakdawala pulled his shot left of the green and so faced a difficult chip shot.  He steadied his nerve and played a delightful pitch to within just three feet of the hole and gave a wave to the applauding gallery.  When Mirza and Fadlu-Dean both then missed their par efforts Lakdawala was left with two putts for victory which he gladly took.

In his speech at the prize giving Lakdawala commented; “I would like to thank the sponsors J. Lindeberg and Chervo for their support once again.  Stephen Hubner (Dubai Creek, Head Golf Professional) and all of his staff at the Creek did a fabulous job with the course and the running of the tournament which I am sure all of the players would agree.  On a personal note it was very exciting to be in contention and back in the winner’s circle again”.

In the Ladies Championship Nasha Sarkari made a successful defence of her title with scores of 83 and 80 for 163 and a two shot win over Naema Maya.  It had looked as though Naema would win her first Club Championship when she had a one stroke lead playing the final hole.  But she made a disastrous triple bogey 7, and when Nasha made her eighth par in a row to complete a near perfect back nine of 37 she was crowned champion.

The Junior Championship was a very one sided battle as Serifa D’Souza blew the rest of the field away with scores of 80 and 79 to become the first female winner of the prestigious title.  She won by a massive 15 shots over young Jai Bhalla who scored commendable rounds of 89 and 85.

Mrs Brigitta Dagostin who is the Managing Director of Mona Emirates Trading, the local distributer for Chervo and J Lindeberg commented, “Chervo and . Lindeberg are delighted to be sponsors of Dubai Creek’s most prestigious member’s event.  Many of our valued customers play at The Creek and so it is nice for us to be able to support them in this way.”
