Carrahar wins The 2011 Gun Trophy at Al Ghazal Golf Club

Last Friday at the Ghazal Golf Club, Paul Carrahar blew the field away with a superb 65, to win the oldest running golf trophy in the history of golf in the U.A.E. The Gun Trophy which was sponsored this year by Scott Security.

Carrahar scored 33 on the front and a more impressive 32 on the harder back 9 to win the trophy in style.  His closest rivals all on 69 had to be determined by count back with second place going to Bob Malone having a better back 9 of 34 from third placed Kevin Darroch’s back 9 of 35, with Richard Whiteside losing out on the final countback. The 2’s club subsidiary competition was divided by 5 winners who were Captain Peter McManus, Rob Jennings; Ken Ritzal and Clyde Rhodes who carded 2 2’s on the 3rd and 11th holes.

The ladies division was also determined on count back between Li Rhodes and Anina Bester.  Both ladies scored 72, but Li’s better back 9 score of 37 just piped Anina to win the ladies Trophy and Anina having to make do with second place.

The Gun Trophy was first is one of the longest running trophies in the history of Abu Dhabi sand golf!  The trophy was first presented in 1971 to Abu Dhabi Golf Club [Sand course] and as per the trophies inscription was awarded annually from 1985 in memory of Lt. Col. Sidney Hunwicks [Member between 1971 and 1985]; the first winner in 1971 was E.A.T. Sharp.  Past winners, include current AGGC members Captain Peter McManus, Colum Boyce and Jim Pullinger.  The actual trophy of an old gun carriage and cannon is set on top of an empty 25 pounder brass shell; this trophy is priceless in the eyes of the members of the AGGC!

Captain peter McManus announced the prizes and past Lady Captain Pat Mc Manus presented the prizes on behalf of Scott Security.
