Captain’s Day at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club

The annual Captain’s Day was contested recently at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. This year’s event was another great success with over 100 players turning out to compete and celebrate the year of Club Captain Mr Ara Nakhnikian and also the first ever Creek Ladies Captain, Mrs Mego Han.

The afternoon produced some excellent golf and a great deal of fun, and in the end there were four teams tied with a superb 6-under par 65 in the ‘Pairs Better-ball stroke-play’ format.  This meant that the top 3 places were to be decided on count-back and it was Emirates Golf Club members Alan & Soumaya Salem who were crowned champions due to their outstanding back nine of 4-under par 32.  After being presented their prize the pair commented; “It was a great day out, we couldn’t have asked for a better day, sun mixed with clouds and wind, enough breeze to challenge our golf skills on various into the wind holes and a great course condition with smooth and fast greens.  We had to finish in style on the last 6 holes with birdie, birdie, par, birdie, birdie, par to get into the running.  The dinner at Legends was absolutely phenomenal, the food, the ambiance and the company was world class.  We would like to express our gratitude to the Creek Golf club for hosting such great event, Captain Ara Nakhnikian for organizing a wonderful competition and Pro Sports for sponsoring the day”.

Dave Gowans & Joy Lirio took the runner-up place over Mark McCarthy & Ray Downes with their 3-under par back 9 to Mccarthy and Downes’s 2-under par inward half.   Unfortunately despite tying for first place Dubai Creek’s Vice Captain Mr George Horan and partner Michael McGinlay were left out of the prizes due to only managing a one-under par back nine.

It was a particularly special night for the junior staff of Dubai Creek as they were awarded an incredible cheque to the sum of AED 89,000 from the members for all of their hard work throughout the year.  The money was raised as part of the Staff Fund which has various fund raising activities throughout the year and was passionately driven by the Captain Ara Nakhnikian and supported strongly by the members of the club.
After conducting the prize presentation Dubai Creek’s Head Golf Professional Stephen Hubner commented; “It really has been a wonderful day of golf and an even better night here in the stunning Legends restaurant.  On behalf of all of the junior staff here at The Creek a big thank you to Captain Ara in raising such an incredible amount and we are happy to announce that due to some last minute generous donations from our members the fund has now passed the AED 100,000 mark!  Thank you all so much for your support of this great club and the staff who look after you.”
