Buxmanns Win Close Contest at Tower Links
In the seventh Qualifier of the 2011-12 season, Manilyn Buxmann, playing alongside her husband Johan, became the first lady to win a place in the June UAE National Final.
The UAE’s northernmost club, Tower Links Golf Club in Ras al Khaimah, hosted the latest event on the Tech Access International Pairs UAE Presented by Cadillac schedule and as usual, the course was presented in immaculate condition.
In perfect weather, it was always going to be a close affair and the Buxmanns won the Tower Links event by a solitary point. Manilyn and Johan, who boast respectable handicaps of 12 and 5 respectively, compiled a steady front-9 of 18 stableford points in the better-ball format before a storming finish, completing the final 6 holes in 5-under par for a total of 41 stableford points. This was good enough to secure victory from Joe Wivou and Yuki Pellerine.
Wivou, who also finished in the runners-up position in the 2010-11 Tower Links Qualifier came up just short once again despite an excellent inward nine of 23 points that featured a net eagle and two net birdies. Also finishing on 40 points was the pairing of Paul Williams and Joe Madin who held the clubhouse lead for a long time but ultimately had to settle for third although the countback went to the last-6 holes.
There were four Nearest-the-Pin prizes on offer and these were won by Joe Wivou, Dave Clark, Greg Maddox and Paul Williams on holes 4, 8, 12 and 16 respectively.
The Tower Links Golf Club International Pairs UAE Qualifier was the 7th in the 2011-12 series. Johan and Manilyn Buxmann join representatives from Arabian Ranches Golf Club, Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, Els Club, Yas Links, Emirates Golf Club and Al Hamra Golf Club who have already secured berths in the National Final.
