Buchanan and Payne win Wednesday social competition at Tower Links Golf Club
Bill Buchanan could not have started life as a Tower Links Member in any better fashion, after cruising to a win in the weekly Wednesday social competition.
Partnering Simon Payne in the two player scramble format was just the right recipe to be introduced to the relaxed atmosphere of golf in Ras Al Khaimah and of the weekly social competition.
Starting from hole 10, the pair started with 5 straight birdies, with a red hot putter doing most of the damage. Holes 15 and 16 stopped the dynamic duo from continuing the birdie blitz as the putter went cold, but in the blink of an eye Bill was up to old tricks, calmly rolling in one from off the collar on hole 17 & another on 18 for a gross of 29 / 28.73 nett.
Roger Floyd & Yuki Pellerine were hot on the heels of Simon & Bill and would have had a real chance of the title had they not had such a sluggish start. Roger took a while to get going and was reliant on Yuki’s calm demeanor and precise decision making. It was not till hole 13 where Roger started to find his straps, as the pair proceeded to reel of three birdies in a row due to his radar approaches and deft touch with the blade.
On hole 16 Roger hit the pin with his tee shot which finished some 6 ½ ft from the hole, but two misread putts halted their birdie frenzy. After a superb drive on hole 17 by Yuki, Roger stuffed a superb wedge shot to no more than 4 ft from the hole for yet another birdie, but unfortunately for the pair hole 18 proved their undoing as they could only manage a bogey and their shot at the title was to finish.
Mark Regan and Greg Maddox once again found their way to the prize presentation arena as they finished in third place with a solid score of 31.90 nett. Regan is somewhat of a back nine specialist it seems, which seems to have a calming effect on Greg Maddox who, can sometimes go a little astray on many of the more challenging holes. Spooning on the night was Pat Mottershead & Rick Wilson with a score of 38.45 nett.
