Book in a Golfing ‘MOT’ to quick start your UAE Golf season

It’s nearly time for the cooler weather to arrive and the UAE Golf season to start

The UAE Golf season is about to start: Congratulations or Mabrook to you all, we’ve completed most of the summer and it’s nearly time for the cooler weather to arrive and the UAE Golf season to start. We’ve had some great news at Yas Links and are very proud to now be included within the Top 100 Golf courses in the world, quite an achievement for a club that has only been open officially for just under 18 months. As I have said before we are spoilt for choice in the UAE with the standard of golf courses all within a reasonable drive.

The golfing market is certainly becoming far more competitive as the number of courses increase and the general numbers of golfers are staying the same. Look out for all sorts of special offers to join golf clubs although few if any will beat the new reciprocal arrangement between Yas Links and Jumeirah Golf Estates. You can now join Yas Links and play JGE for free during the week and pay only the members guest rate at the weekends. A first in collaborations in the UAE and it will certainly add another dimension between golf in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

To really give your season a kick start I would suggest going for a bit of an “MOT” with a PGA Professional. Spend some time gaining the correct swing thoughts and get an idea of where your game stands. Between yourself and your coach, you can set targets or identify weaker points of your game. The likely answer will be to spend some time at the putting green or short game area of your club. The short game will be the first part to abandon us during the off-season, so pay a little love and attention to your wedges and putter!

We are all keen to practice now having a little golf during the summer but please don’t fall into the trap of aimlessly hitting balls down the range. I often ask many golfers on the range what they are aiming for or what they are working on. The most popular response is a vague target in the distance or nothing at all! Most people can hit the ball onto a range – (if you’re missing the range then you really need lessons!) Spend time focusing on specific targets and don’t hit the same club more than twice. We would very rarely hit two shots in a row with the same club on the course so change it up after every couple of shots unless you are doing a drill from a lesson. If you can practice on the range as you play on the course then you have a lot higher chance of transferring that “range swing’ into your play.

Good luck for the forthcoming season and all the best from The Links,
Craeg Deery
