Bahrain juniors to head off in style to the US

Over BD750 was raised at the Royal Golf Club’s San Diego Special tournament at the weekend and the funds will be used to send two promising young Bahrain-based golfers to compete in a prestigious junior tournament taking place in the United States next month.

Over 50 competitors took part in the fund-raising betterball stableford tournament on Friday, each trying to beat the points total of 17-year old Bahraini Dhari Al Borshaid and 16-year old Sam Hobday. Those who didn’t manage to beat the duo’s score of 43 points had to make a donation to the fund set up for their trip.

“Both youngsters have been performing to a very high standard this year and Friday was no exception,” commented Phil Jones, the Royal Golf Club’s Director of Golf Operations. “43 points is a great score and I think a lot of the participants needed deep pockets when they handed in their scorecards and found out how many points Sam and Dhari had achieved. Their performance bodes well for their success in the Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego next month.”

A small number of teams did manage to beat the talented youngsters – the pairing of Paul Cotterill and Karl Crimes scored a massive 46 points to take first place.

At the prize-giving ceremony held after the competition Sam and Dhari thanked all the competitors for their support as well as IADC, Audi and BMMI for their generous donations.

Anyone interested in making a donation to support Dhari and Sam’s trip to the Callaway Junior World Championships is invited to contact Phil Jones at the Royal Golf Club on e-mail p.jones@theroyalgolfclub.com
