August Mashreq Medal Championship Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club

The August edition of the Mashreq Medal Championship in association with BMW and Harvey Nichols Dubai took place yesterday at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.

As was the case in July, the members from both of the local Dubai Golf clubs, Dubai Creek and Emirates, came together for this joint medal.  Despite the summer heat and the humidity kicking in, over 80 players took part with the hope of improving their standings in their club’s respective order-of-merit.

In the end it was Ajay Goel who was crowned champion after his superb net 66 gave him victory by two strokes over Michael Nielsen.  After receiving his trophy and prize Mr Goel commented; “The round turned out to be just one of the days when it all comes together.  A little bit humid, but overall very reasonable weather for August.  Kudos to DCGYC for keeping the course in great condition and thanks to the sponsors Mashreq, BMW and Harvey Nichols Dubai.”

The best gross score of the day came from Creek club champion Ryan Riley who shot a sublime four-under par 67.  Michael Nielsen’s net 68 helped him collect the prize for the winner of Men’s Division A with the runner up spot going to Warren Panting who scored 70. Men’s Division B was won by Emirates member Suresh Shawakramani and the runner up was Andrew George who put together a very respectable 72.

The Ladies Division was won by another Emirates member, Mrs Carolyn Thompson who shot 72, and the Senior Division prize went to Thakur Tolani who managed a 74.  The Junior Division was won by Kabir Nanda, winning on a count-back over Monty Stapleton after both players finished tied on 70.  The winner of the beat The Pro competition was Australian Mark Dennehy, and collecting prizes for their Magic 2’s were Pat Morrow, Paul King, and young Asanka White.

After eight events it is Pat Morrow who leads the Creek OOM table with 349 points.  This lead is only very slender though as John Fellingham follows closely on 346 points.  The top five finishes count towards a player’s ranking in the order-of-merit and in third place is Mark Bishop who has accumulated 334 points from just four events and so is perhaps the favourite at this stage.

In his prize presentation speech Stephen Hubner, Head Golf Professional at Dubai Creek said; “We have enjoyed yet another excellent turnout for this wonderful medal Championship and our thanks as always go to our sponsors Mashreq Bank, BMW, and Harvey Nichols Dubai.  Congratulations to all of the winners and we look forward to welcoming you back for September’s event which is part of the Mashreq Gold Cup.”
