Another Classic Dubai finish as Cabrera-Bello takes the title

It became a Classic ending in Dubai for Cabrera-Bello

As the title says, it became another Classic ending in Dubai. On the outset, this years’ Dubai Desert Classic did not seem like the strongest field. The field included an interesting mix of old, young and new with a sprinkling of high ranking players.
Did this matter? Not really, there were some good crowds, the usual friendly relaxed atmosphere, and the Golf again was pretty damn good finishing right down to the wire on the last hole.
The tournament lead changed hands on the first 3 days several times. No one pulled away from the chasing pack and it was the day 1 leader Rafael Cabrera-Bello who shot 63 to win only his second tour win and pip Westwood and Gallacher.

Two of the main favorites Mcilroy and Kaymer failed to mount a last day charge. In particular, it was a surprise for me that Rory did not push on. During the first 2 days, he looked in really good form, although he still finished in tied 5th.

I personally thought it was going to be Westwood’s year, especially after yesterdays round and lead. The stage seemed to be set and in the press conference after he was in a confident mood and it felt like he might run away on the final round. Westwood misjudged his chip on the last green and just missed the putt to tie. His frustration was plain to see and you did not need a lip reader to know exactly how he felt! Surely one day he will claim this elusive title?

Congratulations are in order for Rafael Cabrera-Bello, the Spaniard was absolutely buzzing in his press conference after and like his countryman Quiros has an infectious personality. The new Seve Inspired Spanish Golfing armada is certainly shining at the moment.

Well, this event spells the end of another successful Desert Swing which is growing every year. Where does the time go? From the website point of view, I did not have as much social media coverage as I would have liked this time which was for many reasons, most of them out of my control. One point though, it is now time for that iPhone, being a Mac Man anyway it should have happened a long time ago…

There will be some video clips added to our YouTube Channel soon from Westwood and Cabrera-Bello in their press conferences.
