Al Quimzi and Ghandour edge Abu Dhabi City Golf Club countback and March into International Pairs UAE National Final
A countback was required to determine the second Qualifier of the 2011-12 Tech Access International Pairs UAE Presented by Cadillac at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club on Friday 11th November.
On a day of impressive scoring in perfect conditions, Roger Sutton & Tim Langford may have expected their back-9 of 23 points to be enough to win a scorecard countback but they were pipped by a solitary point as Hassan Al Quimzi & Sami Ghandour scored 24 of their 42-point total on the inward nine. Al Quimzi & Ghandour’s card came to life after an average front-9 of 18 points as they recorded no fewer than seven net birdies on the back-9.
Sutton & Langford also played the City Golf Club’s picturesque 9-hole course better the second time round but would ultimately come up short, perhaps left to rue a two single point scores on the difficult 5th hole. Taking third place, with 40 points was the team of Stuart Hardcastle & Sid Elday. Playing in the morning alongside defending champions Stuart Blan & Stuart Williams, Hardcastle & Elday’s card was highlighted by Elday’s run of 12 points in four holes as they made a late surge but it was a case of too little too late despite edging Blan & Williams at the finish line!
As well as claiming the title of 2011-12 International Pairs UAE Abu Dhabi City Golf Club champion, Hassan Al Quimzi also won nearest-the-pin on hole 7 while Saleh Al Ameri took the honours on the 4th hole.
Hassan Al Quimzi & Sami Ghandour join Arabian Ranches Golf Club winners Bob Fletcher & Tony Grayling in the UAE National Final while Els Club members will get their chance to qualify on Saturday 19th November.
