Al Hamra Golf Club event raises over 50,000 aed for we are Macmillan cancer support

Keeping up with tradition, Al Hamra Golf Club recently hosted the much awaited golf events – The 5TH Annual Greg Smith Macmillan Cup and the Dawn to Dusk Part 2 Challenge.

The events successfully raised over AED 50,000 for ‘We Are Macmillan Cancer Support’. Founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan, We Are Macmillan Cancer Support has grown to become one of the largest cancer care and support charities.

The tournaments attracted more than 200 golf enthusiasts, double the number from last year,  who gathered together to participate and show their support. The total amount raised is AED 50,055.

The first golf event was the Greg Smith Macmillan Cup held on April 19th and saw the largest shotgun field to date with 112 golfers and 28 teams. The event took place at the picturesque yet challenging 18 hole Al Hamra Golf Course. The top three teams fought a close match while spectators enjoyed the other fundraising initiatives including a raffle draw which took place throughout the night.

On April 23rd, Al Hamra Golf Club held their second “Dawn To Dusk Challenge” from 7am to 7pm. This was led by Al Hamra Golf Club’s very own “Fantastic Four” comprising of Simon Mees, General Manager of Al Hamra Golf Club, and three of Al Hamra Golf Club’s PGA Professionals being; Andrew Pilfold, Ross McArthur and Karl Rowe.

The Fantastic Four played a vigorous 12 hours of golf rushing across the golf course to beat last year’s record. At the end of the 12 hour game, the score stood at 159 holes completed, a score of 60 under par and 28 balls lost setting another record. Taylormade Adidas sponsored the player’s attire.

Simon Mees, General Manger of Al Hamra Golf Club said, “The first Dawn to Dusk challenge left us wanting to set a new record and with this year’s performance we have done just that. Team spirit, encouragement from our colleagues, residents and donors really kept us going and we were exhilarated to have raised funds for ‘We are Macmillan Cancer Support’.”

The Al Hamra Golf Course provides a fun and enjoyable test of golf for the seasoned professional or fledgling enthusiast. Golf at Al Hamra is not just limited to corporate groups and experienced adults. There are a variety of programs that cater to individuals, children, groups and learners in order to engage interest and practice of the sport. Various packages are offered extending over periods of 4 to 12 weeks. Each of these package’s are designed for players who are seeking to learn or take their game to the next level.

The golf course has been home to many tournaments like The Harradine Cup and the RAK Men’s Open Golf Tournament in the past year.
