The 8th Annual Slim’ n Lite Amateur Mixed Open Championship first round at Al Ghazal Golf Club commenced on Friday morning with an 8.30 am and later a 1.30 pm shotguns due to the number of players wanting to play in this popular annual event. The 2012 Champions Ramesh Emmanuel and Rene Valencia didn’t get off to a very good start and were overtaken by several teams, before they eventually registering a score of 79 5 shots of the leaders.
The best round of the day was recorded by the pairing of Anina Bester and Herman Groenewald on 74 and Deborah Castle and Richard Whiteside on 75; another stroke behind were Jaco and Lizette Breytenbach, Kevin Darroch and son Julian Hawlitzky.
The weather had been perfect for the first day and despite shamal warnings the second day’s play began with clear blue skies and a light breeze, a very pleasant game of golf is expected by all for the final round.
The Am-Am event has the additional pressure of making the team players record both scores on the 9th and 18th, this can cause some frustration as the players have to perform in order to keep their scores down,
The eventual winners had to be determined by count back with Rob Jennings and Walter Tiamfook taking victory on net 155 [78 & 77] from Richard Whiteside and Deborah Castle [75 & 80] from third placed Ramesh Emmanuel and Rene Valencia on 159 on count back from Herman Groenewald and Anina Bester.
Subsidiary Prizes : Best first day’s net went to Herman Groenewald and Anina Bester with a 74 and Best second day to Graham and Carmen Hurdon on 78.
