Turn the clock back only two years and our club boasted 4 junior members, none of which with a handicap
or any competitive experience. Two seasons later our golf club is the pride of the Emirates as our kids were crowned Abu Dhabi Schools League Champions at the Garden Course on Thursday afternoon. It was the last of a five leg journey which took them to Yas Links, Saadiyat Island, Al Ghazal, Abu Dhabi City Club and of course here in Al Ain. The Championship was very much Al Ain’s to lose as they entered the last event with a commanding 25 point lead. As rival clubs excelled our kids held steady nerves to post 54 points to hold on to the title by 8 points. The team consisted of Team Captain and UAE number 2 Eoin Cuniffe, Dane Sanford Jnr, Ellie Holden and Daniel Whittaker.
We must also mention Talbot Turner and Leah Holden who were instrumental in some of the qualifying legs. As an added bonus 9 year old Daniel Whittaker won the most improved player of the series which was an incredible feat for the youngest player in the series. Our kids showed maturity beyond their years over the past few months and I truly believe this is a true reflection of the atmosphere the members here at the club create for our kids.
When I grew up Juniors were 3rd class citizens at the golf club but here, thanks to you guys it is the complete opposite. I know it’s not everyone’s idea of a perfect few hours being drawn to play with a junior in a weekend medal but the difference it has made to our kids is inspirational. Not only are our kids top of the golfing tables they are also streets ahead of the other clubs in the way they conduct themselves on and off the course. Alain Golf Club Prides itself on being the only true ‘members’ club in the UAE and we all know the juniors at any golf club are a direct reflection of its members. Thursday was a proud day for our kids, members, staff and everyone here who makes our club what it is. On behalf of our ever growing junior section, we would like to thank you all for your unconditional support over the last couple of years and we hope we can keep doing the club
