Ahmed Al Musharrekh produced the best ever result by a UAE national player on the international circuit

Ahmed Al Musharrekh produced the best-ever result by a UAE national player on the international circuit when he finished a creditable tied 24th in the prestigious Asian Amateur Championship at the Singapore Island Country Club on Sunday.

Playing solid golf, Ahmed closed with a solid one-under-par 71 to finish the 72-hole stroke-play championship on one over par 289, thus creating history of sorts for UAE golf.

The UAE prodigy opened with a three-over-par 75, but picked up the steam as the championship wore on, carding rounds of 70, 72 and 71. The major highlights of his performance at Singapore being an eagle on the 16th which was followed by a birdie on the 17 in the second round as he made cut, which fell at six over, with ease.
In the final round, Ahmed rolled in five birdies, including four in the back nine, to round off his proceedings in the championship with a grin of pride lighting up his face.
Khalid Yousuf, the other UAE player in the field, needed to shoot in the 60s to make the cut, but stumbled on the final stretch. He signed off with a three-over-par 75 in the second round to miss out on playing at the weekend by four shots.
It was Ahmed who held centre-stage for the UAE. Playing with the maturity of an experienced golfer, the country’s leading amateur effectively planned his game and, above all, executed it well on the course.
“Ahmed has done the UAE proud,” beamed Saeed Albudoor, general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation. “His performance in this prestigious championship which attracted leading players from 36 Asia Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) member countries just shows he has the game and the mental toughness to compete at any level.

“He has really worked hard on his game and his scores just reflect that. I wish him the very best for his future assignments. We, at the Emirates Golf Federation, are committed to providing our players with the best possible opportunities to hone their skills.
“Their participation in the Asian Amateur Championship was a step in that direction. Khalid Yousuf may have missed the cut, but we do really appreciate his commitment to the game.”
