Ahmed Al Musharrekh is hitting top form ahead of UAE team Nomura Cup battle

Ahmed Al Musharrekh believes he is hitting peak form at the right time as the young prodigy prepares to represent the UAE team in the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Team Championship — better known as the Nomura Cup — to be held at Denarau in Fiji from August 16 to 19.

A key member of the four-man UAE team that also includes Khalid Yousuf, Abdulla Musharrekh and Saif Thabet, Ahmed showed great strength of character in getting the job done in a superb fashion when he posted a morale-boosting win in the recent Emirates Summer Open.
The 22-year star from Sharjah signed for a brilliant gross 69 over the Majlis course to clinch the prestigious title, beating his nearest challenger and elder brother Abdulla by three shots in the 96 strong field.

“It feels great when you shoot good numbers in a tournament. I am pleased with my game though there are some areas I still need to improve,” said Ahmed, who last year became the first player from the UAE to qualify for the Egyptian Open, a European Challenge Tour event.
“I think I need to work hard to sharpen my short game as it can make or break a good round. We have a very good team this year and we all are confident of producing a much better performance in the Nomura Cup,” said Ahmed.

“I have competed in the Nomura Cup in Taiwan in 2007, and hence know what to expect. I am sure if we play to our potential we can expect some good results. The tournament, which attracts some of the finest talent in the world, will provide a great opportunity for all of us learn from their experience,” said Ahmed who enjoys a solid all-round game with smart iron play being his main strength.

Saeed Albudoor, general manager of the Emirates Golf Federation, was equally upbeat about the team’s good showing in Fiji. “The boys are not short on preparations.  In the run up to the tournament, we organized a summer camp in Oman which was quite successful.
“Individually they have done well, but they need to gel as a unit if we aim improve upon our previous results. The Nomura Cup is a team event with top three scores of four counting towards the total, hence every player needs to be in top gear.

“We, at the Emirates Golf Federation, are committed to providing our players every possible opportunity to hone their competitive edge. They are learning with experience and, I am sure, with time they will be a force to be reckoned with on the regional circuit. I wish them all the best.”
Chris Vallendar, coach of the UAE national team, said: “They have everything to gain from this tournament and the experience of rubbing shoulders with some of the finest amateurs will provide a great boost to their confidence.”
