Colin Montgomerie defeated an elite field in the desert which included nine members of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team. Trailing Miguel Angel Jimenez by one going into the final round, the Scot, having lost almost three stones in weight over the winter secured his victory with a 215-yard driver off the fairway over water at the 18th for a two-putt birdie four.
